Professor Frank Plani

MD, FCS (SA), FRACS, Sub-speciality Trauma Surgery

Frank Plani is the Head of the Trauma Directorate of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and the Co-Chair of the Academic Division of Trauma Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand.
He was born in Trieste, Italy, in 1954, where he obtained his medical degree from the University of Trieste in 1980. He then worked in Zimbabwe on an Italian cooperation program until 1984, and then he moved to Johannesburg, South Africa to train in General Surgery. He obtained his fellowship in 1992. After working briefly at the Helen Joseph Hospital as a general surgeon, he was employed at the Trauma Unit of the Johannesburg Hospital from 1993 to 2006 as a Senior Specialist as well as a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Surgery of the University of the Witwatersrand.
He joined the South African Reserve Police Service in 1996, becoming the Head of the Medical Unit at the Johannesburg Police Emergency Services with the rank of Superintendent, until the end of 2006, when he moved to Australia. He was the Chair of Trauma Surgery at the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre, Royal Darwin Hospital, Northern Territory, Australia, and Professor at Flinders University Northern Territory Clinical School from 2007 to the middle of 2009, when he returned to South Africa to be Principal Specialist and Deputy Head of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital Trauma Directorate and a Senior Lecturer in the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2013 he was promoted to Adjunct Professor. He is in charge of disaster management of the Division of Surgery. He has worked as a mission surgeon for the International Committee of the Red Cross in North West Pakistan.
His main interests are surgical education, disaster management, new technologies for trauma surgery and surgical critical care.

TRAUMA UNIT


Dr Riaan Pretorius

MD, FCS (SA), Certificate Trauma Surgery

Dr Pretorius is currently the Deputy Head of the Trauma Unit of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
Born in Standerton in 1976. Qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Pretoria in 2000. Did his internship and community service in Polokwane in 2001 and 2002. Became a specialist in General Surgery at the University of Witwatersrand in 2009. Currently is a Consultant at the Trauma Unit of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and a Lecturer at the Department of Surgery of the University of the Witwatersrand.
Involved in prehospital medicine training and working on the road since 2001. Worked on the HEMS for 5 years. Also involved on a consultation basis for paramedics and doctors for NetCare 911.




Dr Martin Mauser

MD, Specialist General Surgeon

Born in Reutlingen, Germany in 1971. Graduated as a Medical Practitioner from the University of Tuebingen, Germany in 2001. He trained in General Surgery in Stuttgart from 2001 until 2005. He then moved to Cameroon, where he became responsible for the Department of Surgery in A Mission Hospital. He returned to Germany in the beginning of 2008 where he continued his training in General Surgery and became a specialist General Surgeon in August 2009. He then worked as a Surgeon in Germany until April 2010, when he joined the Trauma Unit of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. From June 2011 to February 2013 he worked at the Trauma Unit as an acting Consultant. Since March 2013, when recognised by the HPCSA as a Specialist General Surgeon, he has been working as as a Consultant trauma surgeon.
He has received the Diploma of Tropical Medicine in Belgium in 2005.




Dr Asad Mushtaq

MD, Higher Diploma in Surgery (SA)

Born in 1962 in Islamabad Pakistan. Graduated as a Medical Practitioner from Punjab University, Pakistan in 1990. He moved to the Republic of South Africa in 1991 where he was employed as a medical officer in the Department of General Surgery at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. He has attained a Higher Diploma in Surgery in 2004 and has been working at the Trauma Unit as an acting Consultant trauma surgeon since 2006. He has developed a special interest in the management of penetrating trauma.




Dr Denzel Mogabe

MD, FCS (SA), Certificate Trauma Surgery

Born in South Africa in 1972. Graduated as a Medical Practioner at the Medical University of SA 2000, completed Internship at Greys hospital in Pietermaritzburg , KwaZulu Natal 2001 and Community service in Polokwane 2002.
Worked as a Medical Officer at the Johannesburg Trauma unit in 2003 after which joined International SOS as Emergency Flight doctor in 2004. Worked abroad in Republic of Ireland as a an Emergency medicine Registrar 2005-2007. Became a specialist in General surgery at the University of KwaZulu Natal in 2012.Currently he is a consultant at the Trauma Unit of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
Been involved in prehospital emergency training and work since 2002. Also a volunteer in Rural surgery Outreach programs in Lesotho on personal capacity.



Dr Vicky Jennings

MD, FCS (SA) Certificate Trauma Surgery

Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1979. Graduated as a Medical Practitioner from the University of Pretoria in 2003 and completed internship and community service in Pretoria.
Became a specialist in General Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2012.
Areas of special interest include the role of laparoscopy in trauma, surgical critical care and penetrating trauma.



TRAUMA FELLOWS ON ROTATION



Dr Liezel Taylor

MD, DA, FCS (SA), M.Med

Dr Liezel Taylor was born and raised in Bloemfontein, where she qualified as a medical doctor in 2002 with an MBChB.
She then obtained a Diploma in Anesthetics (DA) in 2005, and then pursued a surgical career at Stellenbosch University, becoming a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa (FCS) in October 2011, and obtaining an MMed (Surgery) from the University of Stellenbosch in November 2011.
She then worked as a surgeon at Tygerberg Hospital as Operational Head of the Trauma Unit from 2012 to 2014.
She has been a Trauma Fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand since February 2014, being based mainly at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Milpark Hospital Trauma Unit in Johannesburg prior to joining the Trauma Unit at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and the Union Hospital Trauma Unit in November 2015.
Her main interests are Trauma Surgery including vascular trauma, Intensive and Emergency Care Medicine and Abdominal Surgery



BURN UNIT



Dr Adelin Muganza

MD, FRCSI, FCS (SA)

Dr Muganza is the Head of Burn Unit at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.
He was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1963.. He received his medical degree at the University of Kinshasa (ex Lovanium) in 1988. He became a specialist General Surgeon at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2003. He has prominent national and international reputation as speaker.
His special interests lie in research of new technologies and skin substitutes for the management of burns, as well as HIV. He has also considerable experience in intensive care management of severe burns.
Dr Muganza is a member of several societies including the international Society for Burn Injuries, an executive member of Wound Care Association of South Africa.



Dr Rachel Moore

MD, FCS (SA)

Born in Malaysia in 1973, lived in New Zealand and Malawi as a child. Moved to South Africa in 1984.
Graduated as a Medical Practitioner from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1998. Completed internship and community service in Nelspruit, then worked in Wales and New Zealand as a Medical Officer in surgery.
Returned to South Africa in 2004 and started her surgical training in Johannesburg.
Qualified as a specialist in General Surgery from the University of the Wtwatersrand in 2012.
She is currently working as a consultrant in the Burns Unit of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
Her special interests are critical care in severe burns, holistic burns care, and paediatric burns.
